AAGP gladly welcomes students and residents at the annual meeting. The meeting is packed with educational sessions, committee and interest group meetings for members to get more involved, and some fun social events as well. There are also several events specifically designed for trainees. Dates and times for the events below are listed in the schedule of events. Once on site, consult your final program for details and locations.

Scholars Program for Medical Students
and General Psychiatry Residents

Supported by the Geriatric Mental Health Foundation through private donations from AAGP members

All medical students and psychiatry residents who register for the annual meeting are welcome to participate in the Scholars Program. Sign up is required. Reserve your spot in the program before March 5 at www.AAGPonline.org/registerscholars.

Applications for scholarships for the 2012 meeting were due October 1, 2011, and no additional funding is available. (Applications for the 2013 program will be due October 1, 2012. Get more details at www.AAGPonline.org/scholars.)

Saturday, March 17
The GMHF Scholars Fund, through the generous donations of AAGP members and staff, is providing scholarships for medical students and psychiatry residents to get involved with AAGP. A variety of scholarships will be offered, from subsidized memberships and/or meeting registration, partial travel support, to a few, prestigious full scholarships for travel and participation in the AAGP meeting and ongoing participation throughout the year. All trainees will participate in the educational programs for Medical Students and Residents, and the subsequent Mentorship Lunch.

Scholars Program for Medical Students
This program is designed to increase interest in geriatric psychiatry among medical students, inform about opportunities to learn more about clinical elective and research opportunities during medical school, inform about opportunities available in psychiatry residency programs, and connect medical students with a mentor who can help them to further their understanding of the profession and enhance their academic learning.

Scholars Program for Psychiatry Residents
This program is designed to showcase the benefits of fellowship training in geriatric psychiatry, educate residents about the scope and practice of geriatric psychiatry, and foster professional relationships to assist residents with career planning now and in the future.

Mentoring Lunch
Following the Scholars Program morning meetings, all program participants will attend a luncheon to meet individually with a geriatric psychiatrist mentor. This special event is an excellent opportunity to learn more about geriatric psychiatry and make a connection with a mentor who can assist you in making career decisions, connecting with others in the field, and advancing your academic achievements.

Trainee & Training Director Reception

All trainees who are registered for the meeting are invited to a special trainee reception on Friday, March 16, from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. This reception is an opportunity to network with other trainees as well as meet many of the geriatric psychiatry fellowship directors. No sign-up is required.

Developing Your Research Career Breakfast

This breakfast meeting provides information on opportunities for new researchers in geriatric psychiatry and how to get started, obtain research training and support, and persist in the research field. This session is an excellent opportunity to ask your questions about a research career and is especially appropriate for medical students, residents, fellows, and early career scientists.

Early Investigator Poster Session

The Call for Presentations for the 2013 meeting will be available in April 2012.

The Early Investigator Poster Session features research from those in the earlier stages of their career – medical students, residents, research or clinical fellows, or junior faculty (less than two years). The poster session will again include poster rounds, in which senior researchers will meet with the new investigators and any interested conference attendees to review and discuss the posters. Poster rounds are intended to facilitate interaction between senior faculty, young researchers, and the AAGP membership in a relaxed, collegial atmosphere.

MIT Caucus

This forum is an opportunity for AAGP members-in-training to discuss MIT participation within AAGP and issues related to training and career development.

Ways to reduce your costs

Discounted Registration
AAGP offers steep discounts to students, residents, and fellows on general registration and the ticketed events, as well. >> Register online.

Want to find a roommate to share hotel costs?
Many students and trainees prefer to share hotel rooms in order to reduce hotel costs for the meeting. AAGP will assist students and residents by providing a contact list of those interested in this option. It is then the responsibility of those on the list to contact one another and make your own agreements and hotel reservations. If you would like to be included on the list, email cstankiewicz@aagponline.org before March 1.
