7:00 AM–1:00 PM 7:30 AM–9:30 AM 7:30 AM–9:00 AM 9:00 AM–10:30 PM 9:30 AM–10:30 AM 9:45 AM–11:15 AM Several institutions or agencies that provide mental health services in the home will describe their programs during this symposium sponsored by the Geriatric Mental Health Foundation. 9:45 AM–11:15 AM Cases that pose ethical challenges in various clinical settings will be presented, and ethical issues will be discussed. 9:45 AM–11:15 AM Behavioral disturbances are extremely complex and can occur relative to many situations and conditions in gero-psychiatric patients. For instance, behaviors that are considered aggressive are very common in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, occurring in about 40%; 90% of patients during the course of their illness. Certain risk factors include environment, stage of dementia, psychiatric diagnosis, co-morbid medical conditions and psychosocial factors. A comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach is the ideal treatment approach although it can be difficult to attain. 9:45 AM–11:15 AM Depressive and cognitive disorders frequently co-exist in elderly patients. The preponderance of data suggests that the presence of depression increases the risk of dementia in patients with memory complaints. The presenters will discuss their research, and other data in the field, to better understand the interface between depression and cognitive impairment, diagnostic issues for DSM-V, and promising future treatment options targeting mood and memory symptoms. 9:45 AM–11:15 AM This symposium will feature presenters from four different medical schools who will address current issues in geriatric psychiatry education for medical students. 11:30 AM–1:00 PM This presentation will focus on a review of recent legislative efforts to improve the care received by Medicare beneficiaries in the U.S., as implemented by CMS, the federal agency that oversees the operation of the Medicare and Medicaid programs. The presentation will also outline the operational details involved in linking quality measurement to payment systems. Examples from recent CMS initiatives will be discussed. 11:30 AM–1:00 PM This workshop will detail the process of evaluating elderly individuals for various capacities with a focus on testamentary capacity. 11:30 AM–1:00 PM This symposium will focus on new research using PET imaging to examine brain changes in late-life depression. 11:30 AM–1:00 PM This research symposium will cover recent research advances in our understanding of suicidal behavior in older persons with schizophrenia. The topics will range from research studies examining the nature of suicidal behavior in this population (Dr. Cohen), the effects of antidepressants on suicidality in this population (Dr. Lanouette), and the use of telehealth to monitor suicidal symptoms in older patients with schizophrenia at risk for suicide. 1:00 PM–3:00 PM
