Chair: Amita Patel, MD, CMD, HMA, CPE
Faculty: Yadagiri Chepuru, MD, FAPA

Behavioral disturbances are extremely complex and can occur relative to many situations and conditions in gero-psychiatric patients. For instance, behaviors that are considered aggressive are very common in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, occurring in about 40%; 90% of patients during the course of their illness. Certain risk factors include environment, stage of dementia, psychiatric diagnosis, co-morbid medical conditions and psychosocial factors. A comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach is the ideal treatment approach although it can be difficult to attain.

Depressive and cognitive disorders frequently co-exist in elderly patients. The preponderance of data suggests that the presence of depression increases the risk of dementia in patients with memory complaints. The presenters will discuss their research, and other data in the field, to better understand the interface between depression and cognitive impairment, diagnostic issues for DSM-V, and promising future treatment options targeting mood and memory symptoms.
